Arthur is an acclaimed artist, clumsy Max wants to learn from him, and so small disasters occur. ✺rt & Max« is about two lizards who share a love of art. The boy finds the camera by the sea, and the film inserted in it opens up a fantastic world of images to him, as in a flip book. The German translation of ✿lotsam«, which was named Book of the Month by the Institut für Jugendliteratur in May 2007 and received the Luchs des Monats award in April 2007, tells the story of a boy and his magic camera in ninety pictures. It is a fantastic picture story about three pigs who can blow straw huts and wooden houses around, which seems to jumble the picture book pages themselves and sends the pigs on adventurous journeys through space and time. The German translation of »The Three Pigs« received a nomination for the German Youth Literature Award. He was awarded the Caldecott Medal on three occasions: in 1992 for »Tuesday«, in 2002 for »The Three Pigs«, and in 2007 for ✿lotsam«. Since then, Wiesner has released a number of picture books, starting with ✿ree Fall«, for which he created both the text and the pictures, or which are told as stories without words.

After illustrating more than a dozen books by other authors, he and his wife Kim Kahng wrote the book »Loathsome Dragon«, which he also illustrated himself. In 1980, Wiesner made his debut with »Honest Andrew«, an illustration of a text by Gloria Skurzynski. He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in illustration in 1978. Wiesner is also the author of Spot, an interactive story/learning app for the iPad.American illustrator and writer David Wiesner was born in Bridgewater, New Jersey in 1956. I was particularly struck by his textural and imaginative illustrations for Art & Max, a children’s book exploration of painting and the creative process that features lizards who paint. I had the opportunity yesterday so see some of Wiesner’s originals as part of an exhibit at the Brandywine River Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, PA - “ Get the Picture! Contemporary Children’s Book Illustration” - that is on display until October 9, 2016. The also have enough detail to invite the reader to linger over the images. Wiesner’s illustrations have the much-desired characteristics for children’s books of being both visually engaging and thought-provoking. He works primarily in watercolor and gouache there is a page on his website devoted to his materials, and some of the posts about individual titles have some work in progress images. Wiesner varies his approach somewhat to be in keeping with the framework of the story. His website doesn’t have a straightforward portfolio of artwork, but is instead arranged as archived articles, some devoted to a specific title, that include artwork.

David Wiesner is a children’s book illustrator and author, known for titles like The Three Pigs, Flotsam, Mr Wuffles, Tuesday and Art & Max.
